I dropped my laptop about a month ago. The computer works when I hook it up to an external monitor. The laptop screen itself is extremely dim. I was going to replace either the backlight or inverter myself. Just wondering though - if the problem is because I dropped my computer on its side (about a one foot drop on the side), is it more likely to be an inverter problem or a backlight problem? My suspicion is that its a backlight problem because of there was a mechanical shock...is this a fair assumption?

If the screen is dim but still visible then the backlight is likely the culprit. If the inverter had failed I believe you would get an all white screen. Having dropped the unit the problem may be damaged backlight or might just be a dislodged connection.

I've never opened up a laptop so cannot tell how easy/difficult it might be to check/replace a backlight. Good luck with it.

Yea, you may want to open it up and check connections before ordering parts.
