my cable connection has been erratic of late,,,,,dropped connections, that required me disconnecting/connecting the power on it and sometimes the dlink router. it's acting like the modem is the problem. anyway, i called roadrunner support, and as is usual in these cases, they tried to place blame on the router(this after i tried two different, working routers)

so here's one explanation roadrunner gave me.....that the router is changing settings, specifically, that it might be changing port settings. what do you think of their explanation?

i've been using this setup(router and cable box)for years with no problem. this has happened only in the last two days.

Not a lot. Routers/Modems shouldn't change their settings of their own accord, especially port settings. Even if there was a fault in the modem that caused port settings to be changed, it would simply block the connection, not drop it altogether.

However, that doesn't mean that there is not a problem with the router/modem - just that Roadrunner have misidentified the problem.

The only way to eliminate the modem is to try the connection with a different modem that is known to work and see what happens.

i did exactly that,,,as i have another working router. exactly the same model dlink(di 624 wireless). i switched them when the connection was not working, and the connection STILL didn't work. when i brought this up to roadrunner, he said the replacement didn't work because it hadn't been configured.

let me explain at this point......this second router is used as an access point to an inaccessable area. it has been hardwired to the main router. so dlink DID set me up to configure the second router as an access point which included (1)changing the ip address to something other than the default, (2)disabling dhcp on the second router.

classic cable excuse.
Even with cable tv, they will blame everything but their own equipment.
Start threatening to change services and see how fast they come and look.
This is why I have satellite tv now with DSL for ISP.
good luck

The dlink router may not be obtaining the settings from the modem and rr. If you have a computer with DHCP enabled, try connecting directly to the modem. Also you might want to reset a router and connect then view the status page of the router.

That's funny, same thing happened to me .. today. I really have the feeling that RR is doing something to prevent using router. Why ? because since today my linksys router is not working anymore together with RR ... all other item like PC and VOIP get IP addresses ...except the linksys thingy.

I've tried a second router (also linksys) and both had no problem in the past.

It is cray but I connected a bridge in bewteen, which is just bridging and "surprise" now I get a IP ... I guess someone is looking for the tcpip stack the machines are using, or something like that .. because even a clone of mac addr. was not working.

anyway, I will try to switch back in a couple of days .. you never know ...
