I had just plugged in my external hard drive to my new pc when it fell to the floor while it was still running. Now when I turn it out it spins and then begins to make a ticking noise, i'm not sure if this means that the arm is loose or not. the situation is looking grim but if there is anything i can do such as retrieve the files or move the arm back in place, etc before having to toss the hard drive that would be great. also does the freezer actually work on hard drives?

I think you can kiss it goodby, they are not designed to withstand that amount of shock. Repairing hard drives requires a clean room (sterile) you can't have the smallest speck of dust in the air. I doubt the freezer trick will work in this case, if you try it make sure it's well sealed in a plastic bag so that no moisture gets in.

You've probably knocked the hard drive read head out of alignment or the disk is warped. You could try sticking the hard drive in the freezer in a zip lock bag for an hour and then try it.
