Comment: For some reason both of my CD drives are not recognizing when I put a CD/DVD/Software in them. They are present in My Computer but I always get the 'Please insert disk in drive' prompt. The drives are PHILIPS DVD+-RW DVD8631 and SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616E One had gone on me about 6 months ago and I was forced to use the other one only. Now I have both of them gone on me I have tried the 'uninstall' option in the device manager and restarted but the same error is popping up. I'm not sure i have the software.

Reply: (edit)Are you referring to inserting blank media? Try inserting factory CD or DVD media and see if they read that OK.

Reply: (edit)Try disconnecting drive #1 and see if drive #2 works. Then try the opposite.

Reply: (edit)Is the software you are inserting and not reading of your own creation or retail software? Are these drives showing in My Computer and/ or Disk Management?

Reply: (edit)When booting the computer the POST screens that you see whould identify the drives BY MODEL number. Does that happen? Try setting the boot order in the BIOS to boot to CD BEFORE the harddrive. Place your Windows install CD in one of the drives. Reboot the computer and watch for a message on the screen to press any key to boot from CD. If that message comes up, press any key. If the CD starts the installation process then the drive is OK and your problem is with Windows. You will be able to abort the installation with no harm done. If the drives do not show in the POST screens then they are either not configured correctly or defective.

Reply: (edit)I have tried playing any disc. All different formats of media. retail and my own. and yes they show up in My computer. They just always say 'please insert disk in drive X' no matter what is in both of them
