Drives not being recognised

Comment:
Recently my machine stopped recognising its CD drives - both the internal CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive and an external USB DVD RW drive. Yet it will recognise a pen drive plugged into the USB port, but not an external hard drive. Both the internal hard drives are showing OK. So am mystified!!

Are they showing in Disk Management?

Thanks CD/DVD drive not showing in Disk Management. Does show in Device Manager with an exclamation mark but reinstalling driver has not worked. Shows in the BIOS - nothing amiss here afaik.

Remove the CD drive from Device Manager and reboot.
When the other drives are connected, are they showing in Disk Management?

Thanks. Tried that but did not work either. What is so weird is that my computer will not even recognise an EXTERNAL USB CD/DVD drive, nor an EXTERNAL hard drive. But it does recognise USB pen drives!
