Comment:

I just completed putting together an ASUS 5PRD1 VM for my son and upon bootup I am getting new device installed for 2 devices. I go to Device Manager and the USB controller and a PCI are shown as needing drivers. There is already a functioning USB Controller shown as working but apparently there must be another on this mb which has 4 USB connections in back and 2 in front. Should I disable this USB controller? Also there are only 2 PCI slots on this board and a fax modem is installed in one of them. I don't understand what the PCI device is that has the yellow exclamation point in Device Manager is. When I put the CD in from that came with the motherboard, Windows says it can't find the drivers on the CD. ASUS has very little on their web site on this board. No updates for drivers at all. I guess it is too old for them to deal with. You would think that they would have an archive for older boards, but I have not found one. Please advise on what I do next.
TIA.

Too old? It's a S775 board! You just have to know how to use the ASUS website.

Did you install the chipset drivers? the sound drivers? the LAN drivers?

Thanks Jam...much appreciated. I have one question that the bios update proceedure does not answer. It has been a while since I have updated a bios but the software would backup a copy of the original bios just incase you had to re-install it. AFUDOS instructions does not address this. I downloaded a copy of my present bios and when I copied it to A: Drive boot disk, there was not enough room for both versions. I just want to proceed with caution. Thanks again for your help..

the USB controller. It is probably working at present on USB 1 speed. The USB conroller with the yellow marker is probably the extra facility to crank it up to USB2 speed.
It is common to see it that way in Device Manager. In windows XP I believe you can not get the USB2 to work unless you have Service Pack 2 for XP.

NEVER update the mboard bios unless you find specific information on the mboard web site for your model that doing so will cure your problem!
You are taking a big risk when you flash your bios - if the flash fails, and/or the flash chip physically fails while flashing (this is COMMON - these cheap flash chips can only be flashed an unpredictable small number of times), you will have a mboard that will not boot.

In case it isn't clear to you yet, when you install an operating system, you should always load the mboard drivers from the mboard CD once Setup has finished. Windows XP does a pretty good job of finding what supports your mboard and the devices on it, and probably most of the cards you have installed, but you must load the mboard drivers, especially the ones for the chipset, in order for XP to fully support the mboard properly.
You don't just put the mboard CD in a drive hoping Windows will find the drivers - it often won't - it sometimes needs to be pointed to the right place, or the drivers may be inside a compressed file or something.
Start up the mboard CD and use its own install for each component.

After you do that, you will probably find all the USB is working. USB 2.0 support is frequently something XP cannot identify properly until at least the proper chipset drivers have been loaded.

The PCI device with the yellow ? is probably the fax modem. If you have the CD for it, install it's drivers, using it's own install if it has that. If you don't have a CD for it, examine the faxmodem and find it's model and brand, tell us what you find.

Thank you for your thought provoking reply. I have the bios updates loaded on my computer but not installed yet...after reading your reply..I will wait until there really is a need. The modem shows in Device Manager and it is working fine. Could this PCI listed with the exclaimation point still be for the modem as it has already been assigned. I suppose I could just disable it to see what happens. I did run the cd from the manufactorer as you said but it stated that Windows XP Pro SP2 does not need USB drivers.
Thanks again for the help. If anything else strikes you as a possible answer please let me know.

Sometimes Windows doesn't get rid of the entries with the yellow ?'s when it should - try RIGHT clicking on it, choose Un-install.
If it's not there after a reboot, problem solved.

Win XP SP2 already has USB 2.0 support built in, but XP must properly identify the capabilities of the mboard chipset in order to support USB 2.0 on that mboard - loading the mboard drivers ensures that it does.
