Drive won't read blu-ray disk in windows xp

March 31, 2011 at 11:48:38
Specs: Windows XP, T7300, 2Ghz RAM

I connected this drive to a win xp professional laptop (all updates installed) with the 2x usb y-cable and installed the drivers and power dvd 9 from the install disk. It reads DVD disks without issue, but I couldn't get it to play a blu-ray disk (I tried a couple of films). The drive spins up the disk and then it disappears from win explorer, spins down then spins up again, reappears in win explorer and the diappears and spins down again. This just happens over and over. I checked the Asus website and couldn't find any firmware (the drive says it's on version C101). Any help appreciated.

Stupid question but I have to ask, is this a Blue Ray capable player or a regular DVD player?

Did you install the version of Cyberlink PowerDVD that was bundled with the drive?

Do you have SP3 installed?

THX, I do the same thing frequently. Look at the OP's title to the thread.

Yeah, it's a blu-ray drive.

I have SP3 installed and installed the version of PowerDVD that came with the drive. I didn't install everything off the disk, just the drivers and PowerDVD player.

Could the problem be related to HDCP? I believe that XP doesn't support this.

I am travelling at the moment in the US and bought the drve here, so want to be sure it's working before i go home. I have a win7 laptop at home, which seems to be what all the reviews I have read have installed the drive on.

XP doesn't support UDF 2.5 volumes like newer versions of Windows do. If you're trying to browse the BD with Explorer, you need to install a UDF 2.5 reader.

Try this:

(ignore the xbox hd-dvd stuff, all you need is the UDF 2.5 reader, a 35K download)

Thanks. I will give that a go this evening. I also found someone with a win7 machine laptop here, so I'll hook it up to that too and see if it works okay.

I'll update later with results!!

No, the UDF2.5 install didn't help. The disk still won't play in PowerDVD or show up in Explorer. The drive appears in Device Manager, but disapperas and reappears when there's a blu-ray movie in it. Haven't had a chance to try it on the win7 laptop yet.

Tried it this evening on the win7 laptop and it worked straight away. Didn't need to install any drivers or software, just worked immediately.

Thanks for the help.
