IEEE 1284 is a parallel cable standard. So what, do you have a 1284 printer cable you're connecting to that old deskjet? And maybe are wondering if the cable needs a specific driver? It doesn't. Just make sure the parallel port is configured for a bi-directional mode in cmos/bios setup.

XP has native support for that printer so it should install the printer drivers when it detects it. Devices connected to a printer port are not usually hot-swappable as are USB devices so connect the printer before turning on the computer.
