drive not recognized

Specs: windows 7, 74.5GB/512 mb
hi, i am behind an ole dell desktop which has 8 usb ports 4 of which are working.I have a simple drive model 96300-40001-001 which carries important data and when plugged to window 7 computer gives out "drive not recognized" message.I have tried hooking power directly in wall outlet and changing usb cables,tried drive on different computer but of no avail.The drive makes clicking noise like two or three times.Is my drive fried?is there any way i can recover data?

The link below may help you determine if the hard drive is failing or has failed.

Connect the drive and then run a hard drive fitness test on it from the manufacturers website.

Also look for the drive in Windows Disk Management. If the drive shows up there then highlight the listing and then post all the information listed for that drive.

If you only hear a couple of sounds then the drive may be OK. Crashed heads click constantly. If the bearings are seized then the drive doesn't rotate at all.

The hard drive may have a format not recognized by Windows. Like a drive out of a TiVo.
