I'm sitting here on my friend's comp and her basic cd drive will read cd's. Then she has a sony DRU-510A dvd-rw drive. It will read cd-r's, but it won't read regular dvd's. I'm assuming this has to be a driver error. Am I correct in this assumption. And if so, could I just uninstall the driver, restart windows, and it will reinstall it's own set? Thank you for the help.

I'd be doubtful if it involves drivers - DVD drives employ a pair of lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. Possibly the DVD one has failed or has gotten dirty.

You might have a look at the support page for that model

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.

Sure, give it a try.

Other things to consider would be cleaning the lens as jboy suggested, checking the IDE to make sure nothing has shaken loose, and reinstalling the MOBO drivers.

Sony drives are also pretty fussy about media. Make sure you are using an approved brand of DVD.

Thank you for all the support. I'd have to say that probably jboy is right. I'd guess the lens is either dirty or has gone bad for dvd reading. I'm gonna give a few of these things a try. Thank you all.
