i want to get a graphics card. i know alot about em but the sticky point is i never looked into power supplys and i never find out how noisy graphics cards are
so any way i have a 480 antec power supply a asus mobo cant rember which. not got them yet but two segate drives one fan and a amd am2 processor i think(cant rember as). now my pc runs quiet and cool very cool cpu is only 2 degrees above the room temp which is a first for me. so i want a 8800gt but i dont want it to get noisy or too hot.
is there an aricle that will help me figuire out if the psu is up to it? and does any one know if the 8800gt's run noisy or hot?

There are no free lunches in the world of physics. If you install a more powerful graphics card it WILL generate more heat. The heat needs to be removed from the GPU. However that is done it will probably make additional noise. In addition, the heat is dissapated into the case, which then needs to discharge that additional heat, or retain it. As a general rule, larger fans generate less noise to move an equivilent volumn of air. So, expect more noise and higher temps. To counteract the temps install larger exhaust fan/s in the rear of the case.
I would go to newegg.com and read customer reviews about various 8800gt video cards. I just did a lot of that myself when looking for a new PCI express video card-though I didn't get an 8800GT. Some of the reviews for the card I did buy, an XFX 8600 GT, said that the fan was loud, while a few said it was not. I think tnat partly depends on what you are doing-such as intense use of the video with gaming. Some customers mentioned that they bought a third party cooler and that reduced the noise. I haven't installed the card yet, so I'll see what happens shortly. There are fanless video cards-but then you have to worry about the temps getting too high, as OtheHill mentioned.
dont think heats going to be too much of a problem since the case is running at room and i have just one masive fan on the back of the case that is turned at its slowest setting. just noise. i dont know whats happend to me mabey its my age but i now think noise is a pain in the ass. i use to have a asus gforce 6800 TI with a mssive ots system and it was noisy so much so that you could not sleep in the same room with it on and you could hear it down stairs but now after cobbeling together my new computer silence is golden. i dont want to ruin in and i dont wasnt to go down the route of water cooling since i think its over priced restrictive and a bit risky.
i did have a brain wave when i was drunk and it involved a pelitie device 2 heat sinks lots of insulation a fan and humetically sealing my case and some silicon beads. but that was when i was drunk and in the sober light of day far too much trouble to set up
