I read somewhere that when you have two cards using SLI and the game supports it, you can have a 1.9x performace boost (ie nearly double what you's have with just one card). Is that true or did I misinterprtate what I read (it wasn't exactly very clear - it was a leaflet that came with my SLI motherboard).

Yes and no. One problem with SLI is that if you have two powerful cards the CPU will become the bottleneck. I don't think the most powerful CPU could keep up with two 7800GTX cards.

There are other factors to consider. For example, i'd rather have one 7800 card vs. 2 6800 cards because the 7800 has a new architecture that will support more features than two 6800's.

If the 1.8GHz processor is the one you are planning to run SLI on it would be a complete waste.

Hmm, The mobo I bought is a socket 939 right now I can only afford a Athlon64 3200+ (think it's 2ghz). But I wasn't intending on getting two graphics cards right now anyway (again I can only afford one).

What I was thinking of doing was saving up and buying the best processor I can and then stick in the two best graphics cards in about 9 or 10 months time. So maybe I'd get an Althlon FX or, maybe a dual core AMD.

Or, maybe by then they'll have incorperated dual core with the FX chips... (possible?) That'd be nice.

I would strongly recommend you dont use two cards in SLI at the moment. Well, correction let me re-phrase that. I wouldnt use two of the most powerful garphics cards at the moment. For three reasons, two of which have already been highlighted.

1 - Processors cannot keep up,(until games are developed to utilize dual core proecssors),
2 - Cost
3 - No game will truelly take advantage at the moment of this kind of power.

I was thinking of having an SLI with two XFX Overclocked Geforce 7800GTX 490mhz 1300mhz. Even though I have an Athlon X2 4800+ it would be pointless as I could already push every game to the limit with just one.
