Specs: Windows Vista
my laptop battery is dead as in dead, and I live 2hrs from town. Will it hurt to leave without a battery for an extended period of time. I've always been told PC's have an inturnal back-up battery to prevent memory loss

If you are taking the battery out to get a new one, you should be OK. Unplug the charger and let the laptop set, or take it with you. The battery is to operate the unit without the charger. Leaving the battery out for days is not going to cause problems. Refer to the owners manual to verify that the unit has to have the battery in place to use it with the charger.
There is a small battery internally, but that is for hardware settings, not program data. Program data is stored on the C: drive, usually. It doesn't require power to hold data.

You can leave the laptop un-powered for years. The cmos battery and other power don't mix ever on any system I have ever seen. Those silver batteries will never be safe to be charged so that is why then don't mix the power.

Since the normal laptop battery is bad just remove it too. It may leak or be damaged mechanically. Not worth the danger to leave it in.
