The Core 2 Duo is a completely different animal than the X2. The difference in L2 cache size should have very little to do with your decision.

but if you had 2 cpus that were similar other then the cache, the cache size can make a difference in performance, it depends what the PC is doing, affects different things differently. eg. gaming versus video encoding etc.
The cache is one thing that differentiates eg a Pentium 4 2.4ghx from a Celeron 2.4ghz

The point is, you can't make direct comparisons between Intel & AMD CPUs because they use different technologies. It would help if you mentioned which Core 2 Duo you're considering. I had a look at newegg & the X2 6000+ sells for $160 (retail) or $179 (OEM). I would think it would be the other way around? It's the same CPU in either case...check the OPNs:

And notice that the 6000+ is a 125W CPU, so a decent PSU is an absolute necessity.

I'll take a stab at it & guess that you're asking about the E6550. They seem to be fairly comparable, depending on the benchmark test, but I'd say the nod goes to the E6550:

Cache doesn't come into play unless you are doing some pretty hefty processing. If you're a typical pc user that doesn't do a lot of heavy computing, then the amount of l2 cache will make no diff.

my work m8 reckons to go for the amd as its cheaper faster and ideal for what ide use it for

my bro recons i should go for the intel becuase it has the 4mb cache and it will run cooler
