Does a USB box need a fan?

I have a Nexstar.2 USB 3.5" enclosure which I will use to transfer data from an older hard drive to a new computer. I have seen fans advertised, which cool the drive/exclosure. Is this necessary?

If I were to use an external USB hard drive box, I would want an anclosure with a fan. But that's just me. When I was using external HDs, I just used adapter cables without a box because I was a little concerned about heat. But I had mine connected all the time. If you just connect yours temporarily to copy or paste files, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

That's ok, Doghead. It would probably be a good idea to wait for other opinions. :-)

You don't need fan because enclosures are made of aluminum that dissipates heat well. Benefit of no fan: no noise.

I would think any indication if whether you need a fan or not would be the temperature of the hard drive and enclosure - BTW - not all enclosures are made of aluminum.

Summary: As Stuart says, measure the hole, but if you measure between the screw holes unfortunately this doesn't give the fan size, only the mounting size. I've just measured an 8cm fan & the distance between ...
