Do we need more power?

Apple Imac all-in-one desktop

Specs: Macosx 4 and 6, 512MB / 1G
As we know years ago we started with few kilobytes of ram and we had enought to do programs and games with basic then we came to megabytes of ram era and cd-roms we could say computers started to be usefull then came movie era 128mb and up and we had also posibility of doing 3d animations anyways now we have
1GB ram 500gigas or 1 terabyte of hd and 3d cards of 1 giga too really cool but i whould like to know why we need more ? We can have even 8gigas of ram but that's bit beyond my mind
I feel that most people is happy with music , movies office, internet and games but they don't see that u can do 3d animations too or programming and as i do I think we have enought as we can do so much now a days my point is that i remember when i had 32mb of ram and just to dream about having 256 MB of ram and being able todo some 3d cad and animation.

I whould like if someone could explain me why we
need 8GB of ram and then 16GB ram etc I mean us home users and I whould like to have games excluded as we know games are 1st reason to have more and more.

I hope I explained my self

Today's software are very demanding take example of win vista(if u want to rum vista smoothy u need 2gb or more) another reason is mult task today u can play heavy 3d game and u can do another think like converting audio.Today's recomended ram is 4gb but i believe in future 4gb will not be enough why b'cause of software demanding more and more the same goes to hd today's application can take 12gb of space, same goes to cd,dvd, blue ray disc.Today's dvd disc isn't enough there are soft that can't fit to dvd that's why there is blue ray disc all bcause software demanding more more more...

Quackestar,

You are making the same mistake as Bill Gates made around 1983. He said he couldn't imagine a situation if which a desktop computer would need more than 1Mb (thats one megabyte) of RAM.

That was before Windows came along and MS-DOS with extended memory management was leading edge technology.

May be is the same but for me we have reached a point that technology is not improving as most of it is just windows and as we know windows is like pacman it just goes eating bits of memory untill ur pc is useless, and touching my imac or pc screen won't make things better i prefer to se some holographic technology like the holodeck before some touchscreen to impress me, I still see a cli os much better than a gui os
I love unix and it's way of using all correctly instead of wasting gigas of ram to just do some basic thing like writing in notepad or using calculator for example vista is nuts

It's not windows that demand more memory but all of today's application demands more. U think cli os is much better than gui tell how will u run game like crysis in cli os or run adobe photoshop cs3 in cli os?

Imagemagik and as for crisis well game suck from level 6 to end all too linear I prefer to see an ascii crysis version hihi
Well we do need gui os but I like to have most apps as cli
as most cases we don't need to see a cool colorfull window with a progress bar of it , that's why i like cli oses like unix in mac we have option to have same program as gui or cli and now im replacing unrar gui for cli as i got tired of my old unrar gui program apart is an 32bit program and I want most of my stiff 64bit if posible and that takes less resorces.

Anyways I didn't want to start a os war just felt that a 8GB laptop or desktop for a home user is bit to much specially that they just use it to do basic things.

If 8Gb is to much don't use it. Nobodies twisting your arm.
