OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: 1.8 Ghz Sempron/512 Mb
Comment:

I am wanting to upgrade my video card from a GeForce4 MX 4000 to a 6600 or higher, is it possible to run it nicely (or at all) on a Sempron 3000+ 1.8 Ghz and 512 Mb RAM? And if not can you please recommend some affordable hardware that will enable me to run that kind of high-end GFX card perfectly?

Thanks for any help/feedback :)

You have actually a good setup to have that kind of GFX card.

If you want u can add anoder stick of 512mb ram to ur mobo and get Geforce 6600GT or 6800ultra..u will hve a blasting performance..except that u hve a sempron unlike the other AMD athlon 64 which is a booster phase of 3D gaming.

Btw, what kind of Ram do u have?(DDR400, DDR333?)
Or the Mobo u use? do u hve a dual chanel mode?

Celeron D 2.40 Ghz
DDR333 512mb ram

Thanks JC, will the Sempron cause many problems performance wise?

Actually, AMD designs its Microprocessor to be much faster than that of Intel...but the only issue is...AMD burns faster but permorms fast unlike intel, it has a premium technology that has a quality design compared it to AMD.

Sempron vs. Celeron D wins Sempron, if compare to performance..but to Pentium 4...not likely to compare..

Athlon 64 vs.Pentium 4 with HT(hyper threading technology) wins..much likely deuce..

I recommend you, download EVEREST HOME EDITION to have further info about ur PC..u can c dr ur type of ram and anything else..

The socket A 3000+ Sempron runs at 2.0GHz, the socket 754 3000+ Sempron runs at 1.8GHz, so it appears you have a S754 system. The S754 doesn't support dual channel mode, so that naswers that question. As for the video card, the MX4000 is a piece of crap, but you don't have enough CPU power for the 6600GT or 6800 Ultra. I suggest you set your sights a little lower...maybe a Radeon 9600XT or if you have a powerful enough PSU, a Radeon 9800 Pro

Thanks jam!

How would I find out if my PSU is powerful enough? Can I do it with EVEREST? What the hell is a PSU?!

So you are saying 512 Mb of DDR RAM is enough but my processor isn't? So what processor that's not too pricey would you recommend to run the 6600?

Sorry, I forgot about the RAM issue...you'd be better off going with 1GB (2 x 512MB) for gaming. And if your 2nd stick matches your 1st, you'll be able to run dual channel mode if you upgrade your board in the future.

PSU = power supply unit. Not only do you need enough wattage (350W minimum, more is better), but you need to have enough amperage on the +12v rail (16A is absolute minimum, 18A or more recommended). Check the label on the side of the PSU. Many higher end, power hungry video cards have to be connected to the PSU, so having enough power is critical.

You could upgrade to an Athlon 64, but you'd probably be looking at $125-150...I don't know if it'd be worth the investment or not.

Have a look at this discussion in the gaming forum. You may wanna post a question about video card/CPU relationship over there & see what heropsycho has to say

With what you're talking about spending on additional RAM, a processor and a video card, you could buy an XBox. They game much better and they're cheaper than this upgrading craze.

THe 4000 is a poor video card, but reven an nVidia based 5200 may be enough for your needs.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
