Do I need to remove my hard drive?

Dell / Insperion b130
July 29, 2009 at 07:34:20
Specs: Windows XP
My C drive is completely full so I wanted to move my files onto an portable hard drive. First, I decided to run a disk clean. While disk clean was runing, the computer switched itself off. Now, when I turn it on, it will only stay on for a minute or two before switching off.
Question# 1:
If I can't turn the computer on for more than a minute or two, do I need to remove the hard drive to recover the data or can I still connect it to another computer with a cable and access the C drive from the working computer?
Question #2:
Does this sound like a problem with the memory that can be fixed by putting in new memory? Or does this sound like a more complicated expensive problem that probably isn't worth fixing?
Thanks for any information you can provide!
