do i need thermal grease

It may come with the processor, or the processor may come with the little thermal patch. Peel off the cover and stick it on kind of thing. It wouldn't hurt. tho, to buy a small tube of the silicone compound. I bought one at Radio Shack for $3.99 USD. It will probably last me for years.

The new P4's have a thick grey sort of semi pliable compound already attached to the heatsink/fan combo. It is no longer a thin black silkscreened type material.

A word of warning though, don't mix thermal grease with the thermal patch. One or the other but not both.
The thermal pad is a one shot solution. If you have to remove the heat sink after it has been installed, to not re-use it. Remove all traces of the thermal pad and then use the thermal grease and use it sparingly. To much can be as harmful as none at all.
