Do I need plug & play driver for new monitor

April 6, 2011 at 08:00:10
Specs: Windows Vista 32, AMD 64x2 5000+ 2.6 GHz
I received this monitor as a gift [ASUS LCD VH198T]. I hooked it up to PC - HP Pavillion a6200n
running Vista HP 32 bit. I used only the VGA cable as the PC doesn't support DVI yet. I adjusted the resolution to its native 1440x900, refresh was at 60Hz...beautiful was all good. The next time I booted up my PC, the display shows the ASUS logo, then Auto Adjust message, then goes blank. The power stays on but no buttons work ie menu etc.

Steps I've taken: I verified the video cable is good, I verified in the BIOS that plug n play is on. new monitor works just fine when connected to another older computer. There is no driver for the monitor available from ASUS. In device manager the only driver shown under monitors is for the old HP monitor. I don't know how/where/if to look for a plug n play driver is present on the pc. or if this is the problem?

My pc info: HP Pavilion a600n, running Vista 32 bit, has Motherboard MCP61PM (NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 video chip), and BIOS version V6.0

Monitor specs: VH198T supports Analog Signal Frequency: 30~80kHz(H)/ 55~75 Hz(V)
Digital Signal Frequency: 30~80kHz(H)/ 55~75 Hz(V).
The ture resolution is 1440x900.

Thanks so much for any and all help! Susan

No monitor driver is necessary & the "plug & play OS" setting in the BIOS should really be set to NO (or disabled), regardless, that particular BIOS setting has nothing to do with your problem.

Are you at least seeing the HP splash screen when you attempt to boot? If you are, try tapping the F8 key, then select VGA mode from the menu. That should allow you to get into Windows, then you can change the screen resolution setting.

If you're not seeing the splash screen, it could be you have a problem that's unrelated to the monitor. Are you hearing a single beep at startup?

Make sure you have the latest graphics driver installed:

And also the latest chipset driver:

Thanks for confirming my direction!!

I actually had just found the graphics driver, downloaded it and the monitor now works again yeah!! I will download the chipset driver now. What is the difference between the two drivers? Will I need to change any settings after downloading these drivers?

Thanks again so much, I was working blindly since I only enough about this stuff to be dangerous!
