i am going to buy a 2.1 speaker system (i havn't got room for a 4.1 or 5.1) but i would like to get the best sound i can get. i only have onboard C-media sound and i was wondering, if i brought a new sound card, would it make a diffrence? if so, shall i get a 5.1 sound card for my 2.1? thanks

If you want the best sound than you should upgrade. Even if you aren't going to use the full 5.1, or even 6.1 or 7.1, output capabilities of a new soundcard uprgrading will give you better sound overall. I would recommend a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 as it will give much better quality sound than what you currently have. And if you ever find room to put a bigger speaker system than you won't have to get a higher capacity sound card in the future.
