DMA on 2nd IDE channel

Comment:
On my PC, the Primary IDE channel is set for "DMA mode if available. The secondary IDE channel controller said PIO mode on both devices, one is a CDROM, the other is CDRW. Is this correct, or should I change the secondary IDE controller to "DMA if available"? Is there any valid reason to leave the secondary channel in PIO mode?

Depends on the CD drives you have. But most burners I know have DMA33 and unless you have a quite slow CD-Rom it should be the same!
I think you should try it. But it can happen that the system becomes really slow. I had that because my old 2,5GB Quantum Bigfoot didn't work with DMA. It took about 30 minutes to boot and start windows but then I coulöd change it back and everything worked as before!
