this router will work, sometimes hesitate for like 10-15 seconds or just flat out disconnect, i replaced a hub that had a couple ports die and never had this problem before, i have comcast, does comcast do something weird with their service that would cause a router to act flakey? anyone have any experience with this router? i can see and access shared resources on the lan ok, any settings that make it work like it should? i emailed their tech and explained the situation, they said i should call, i would appreciate any help with this, thank you

Make sure you have the latest firmware for your router, double check your router configuration settings. You may have to contact Comcast. They may have to reset some settings on their end to communicate with the new Mac address of the router. For instance with BellSouth DSL you have to leave the modem powered off over night so that their system setting reset on their end and then the modem will start communicating with the new MAC address of the router. You do not use Comcast's software. You use the Router's software. If it is a PPPoE in the router configuration you give it the complete sign in for you DSL account and when you connect to the web you let the router sign you in. The router should handle everything if it is configured properly. Once you get the internet connection working properly then you install the Router software. You can also use the network troubleshooter built into XP. Click on Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Info/Tools tab from up top/Net Diagnostics. If any info you recieve from this confuses you then post back with the results of the test and we will try to help.
Good Luck.

hey dave02 thanks a lot for offering your help, i updated the firmware and the router admin indicates the version of the firmware i applied, the mac address of the router is the mac address of the cable modem, i copied down the mac address of the modem, powered down the modem, disconnected all the network cables from the router, except from one pc, i brought up the admin for the router, keyed in the mac address from the modem, saved it to the router, powered up the modem, at this point i was able to connect to the internet, if the mac address was not right would i be able to connect to the internet at all? anyway, all the lan pc's can connect to the internet and browse shares on the lan, all internet connectivity seems to work ok, then for whatever reason the hesitation occur, lights on the router indicate there is a wan connection and all the lan pc lights indicate they're connected, ran the network diagnostics and got something interesting, they all passed, i did ics before the router so i had two nics in my pc, i removed the one nic, the other is onboard, network diagnostics says the other nic is still there and it passed the tests, it's not in device manager, what does that mean?

thanks again

You shouldn't have to manual set the mac address. Your router should have it's own unique mac address. If this is a PPPoE account all you should have to do is give the router the complete sign in and password. You will have to tell the router what the DNS server is. It will probably want the Primary DNS and the secondary DNS. Your TCP/IP should be set to automatically detect. It will be best for you to reset the Router to factory defaults and then make the necessary chamges and then reboot the computer. Do all of this with the modem unpluged from the power supply. Then once you have your network configured in your router then plug the modem in and let the router take over. Launch your Internet browser and try to surf. It may take a few minutes for it to initially connect. Let the router do the work and sign you in. If after about 30 min you still can't connect, you will need to call your ISP tech. support and have them reset the settings on their end. To find out your DNS server info you need to call your ISP and request that info from them.

i don't have to sign in to use my service, only thing that wants a username and password is email, i've never had to indicate a dns server, all comcast/at&t ever did was have me call in the mac address for my cable modem, the manual for the router says to clone the mac address from the cable modem to the router

after the net diag found the stuff for the other nic i had in my pc, i ran regedit, since the nic wasn't in my pc anymore i figured it would be ok to delete any references of it in the registry, i rebooted, ran the net diag again and the second nic stuff was not found, i popped open 3 browser windows, email, downloaded from newsgroups all at the same time and there's no hesitation or disconnects

do you know why after physically removing the nic net diag would still find it? and it passed tests?

whatever the case, it seems by you getting me to run the net diag i found a way to fix my problem, thanks!
