I have scoured the forum and not found the right answer.
I have a D-Link DI-524 router but no manual. I have set it up, works fine, but it is NOT secure. I have tried the 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 to no avail, MS Explorer and Firefox does not recognize them. What is the best and easiest way to secure my router
thanks a bunch!

Download the D-Link manual here:

ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/di_broadband_gateways/di-524/di-524_manual.pdf

The default address is 192.16.0.1. However the previous own may have changed that. To find the current address go to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all. The Gateway address is the address of your router.

If that doesn't work you may have to reset the router to factory defaults. The manual will tell you how.

I have found that some browser add-ons you may have installed for Internet Explorer, such as Google ones, will automatically add a www. at the beginning of of the 192.168.n1.n2 when you type it in - if it does, you have to close or disable whatever is doing that. It should end up as http://192.168.n1.n2
NOT
http://www.192.168.n1.n2
which will NOT work.

It is recommended you use a direct network cable connection between the router and at least one computer's network adapter in the local network connected to the router when you try to access the router's configuration, rather than you trying to connect to it using only (a) wireless connection(s).

Make sure the network cable connectors are inserted all the way in their sockets - sometimes accessing the router's config will not work if they aren't, despite the fact the router seems to work fine otherwise .

I have no security problem with the default settings in the 524 router's settings when wireless is turned off in the router's configuration.
If you have the wireless turned on in the router's configuration, in order for the wireless to be secure, you must enter an encryption code in the router's configuration, and use the same code for all wireless adapters on all the computers connected to the same network via the router.
