Subject: Divide Error, Damaged boot sector?
OS: Xp Pro
CPU/Ram: P4 3.0 1GB Ram
Model/Manufacturer: I built it
Comment:

I accidentaly deleted my partition on my HD. When trying to boot it told me to put in bootablt media. I then ran the windows xp cd and it showed my drive to be raw. Thats how I knew I deleted my Partition. I recovered the partition but the drive still won't boot. When I try to boot and run recovery programs like PartitionMagic or BootMagic I just get a Divide Error! I can't even run the recovery console off the xp cd it goes to checking your hardware and freezes. I am pretty sure the boot secotr or mbr is damaged but can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it. I have plugged in another drive to the computer in question and it boots fine, so I know its not a memeory, cpu or hardware problem. Its just this drive. Any suggestions?

Start by telling how you accidentally delete a partition...knowing what you did & how might give a clue on how to fix it.

I know what I was doing I just don't know how. I have been attempting to make a usb drive bootable and install xp onto it. I have tried several computers to no avail. During that project I plugged it into my pc but didn't unplug my hd first and ran the xp cd. I was trying to format the usb drive and install xp. When I got to the screen where you can delete partitions and format I selected the usb drive which was being reported as 78gig, it is an 80 gig drive. I deleted that partition and attempted to do the windows setup but it wouldn't let me. When I unplugged and rebooted I got a message telling me to put some bootable media in. I checked the drive with the xp cd and it showed raw. I recovered the partition and it still won't boot. My Hd is 120 gig and reports at 111. I know i was working on the 80gig. That is how it happened.

I used a program called Active@undelete-partition. It still responds exactly as before when trying to boot to it. Just a black screen with a cursor. I can now plug the drive into another computer and it shows up as local drive and I can get into the files, folders and programs. I just can't boot to it.

Active@undelete-partition very likely just recovered the partition but did NOT set the partition Active, it might be able to but have never used program. Hdd will not boot without an active partition.

Connected as a slave, if you go into Disk Management you might be able to set partition active if it is not or if put into original comp , boot into Recovery Console and run Diskpart , I think do not use XP much.

It wont boot to the xp cd it goes to the "examining your hardware" screen then just goes black and freezes. I can see it on another computer as a local drive so I know its active. I can't get into recovery console with this hdd. Every program I have tried to use to repair the mbr wont start. I get divide error.

"I can see it on another computer as a local drive so I know its active." Incorrect, local drive is just saying it is not a network hdd, has not a thing to do with a partition set Active or not.

The errors with the recovery console and other recovery programs , do you get the errors only with the original comp or when hdd is setup as slave in the other comp ?

Do you also now get the divide error with Active@undelete-partition ?

If only in the original comp, I would try a different IDE cable, try the other IDE mobord connector or/and clearing the CMOS memory.

If you have important data on hdd would highly recommend saving it now (connect it to the other comp) , just in case the worst happens.
