Comment:

G'day all ,

I am having a bit of a problem with my display drivers on this computer. Gigabyte GA-k8n51gmf-9 939 motherboard with amd athlon x2 4200 processor 2 gigs DDR RAM and with a new nvidia 8500gt 512mb video card .

I can install win xp and have it running perfectly , but when I try to install Vista Business it is another story . At the moment I have win XP pro installed on my c drive and have vista business installed on another partition but on the vista all I can get in device manager , nvidia geforce 8500gt [this device cannot find enough free resourses that it can use [code 12] ]if you want to use this device you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

and in the display can only get 800x600 lowest 4 bit display .

This motherboard has an onboard display that works ok , but I bought the higher card for playing games and it does not look like I can use it with Vista . All my drivers seem to be up to date :) and I hope I have given you enough info

Any ideas ?

You can set the amount of memory used by the integrated video in the BIOS.

If you aren't using the integrated then set as low as allowed. Otherwise that RAM is in reserve for the integrated.

You should probably add more RAM too. 2GB is minimal for Vista.

Thanks OtheHill , I put another 2gb RAM making it 4gb and doesn't make any difference , I still have the problem . This Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT runs perfect on Win XP Pro , but really does not like Vista Business. I am not too sure what to try next . PSU maybe , although from memory it is an Antec 550w , I will check .

A follow up on this : I downloaded Vista Upgrade Advisor in Win XP and run it and it tells me that everything is ok on this computer to upgrade and lists Nvidia Geforce 8500GT as ok and accepted , so I have not got a clue where to go from here , except to try another video card :) I have put an ATI Radeon Sapphire X600 pro PCI express card in and it passes everything with the vista upgrade tool. Would have liked to have used the new Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT card :)

Can you not install and set up Vista with all its updates, sp's etc. using the ATI card then once the system is updated and running swap the over to the nvidia card and see if the updates make any differences. Also worth checking the GigByte site for updated system drivers as well.

Thanks Tim , trouble is I cannot seem to get it running with vista , it tells me ATI Radeon Sapphire X600 pro PCI express card passes everything with the vista upgrade tool but when you try to run it using that ATI card it wont run . It will run using the native windows drivers until I reboot after loading the ATI drivers then it is just like the Nvidia Geforce 8500GT card . I am trying everything . I am starting to think along the lines that being a 939 m/b the gigabyte GA-k8n51gmf-9 939 might be getting a bit old for the new card . But I am starting a new install of Vista so will try loading the ATI drivers again and see if I have missed anything .

cheers

Peter
