OS: windows 95 b
CPU/Ram: 550MHz 128MB ram
Comment:

after installation of win95b on a clean hard drive, i was updating my video card drivers (ATI Rage 128 pn6001018). I need the display to operate with a minimum resolution of 800x600 and a desired resolution of 1024x768. I receive a "windows protection error" and a shutdown upon rebooting after the required settings change with any setting above 16 color and 640x480. any suggestions on solving this problem?

It sounds like you `might' have a very old monitor that is only capable of 640x480. Try a different monitor.

Nothing to do with your video card. Windows 95 has a problem with CPUs above 350 Mhz. Its a timing problem! Both AMD and Microsoft published a patch to correct the problem but whether it is still available I do not know.

If you under-clock your CPU to 300 Mhz or less, you will find that everything works fine. You can then apply the patch and bring your CPU back up to full speed.

I am having a similar problem with win98, i installed print shop 15, and it won't work because i "can't" change my screen resolution to 800 x 600...I have previously used this resolution, but cannot use it now. The slider scale for it is "locked" and will not move...I have found info on microsoft support-that says, upgrades to Windows 98 cause fewer display options...and also that windows 98 uses generic video drivers which cause this problem...and that you to contact manufacturer of the display adapter and obtain a compatible driver for my display adapter...
BUt have no clue as to how to go about this...S3 by microsoft is listed as manufacturer. I've looked and looked, done "many" searches, and haven't found anything...I've also uninstalled all available drivers on my computer and re-installed, with no luck...the only screen resolution i have available is 640 x 480...
HELP!!

I'm havin a problem with changing my settings, can't get above 800 x 600, was workin ok on 1024 x 768 now just goes blank. Restarting just leaves the screen blank, I've updated the driver but nothing seems to change it. Anyone got any ideas?
