Comment:

I tried to install new hardware on my comp, but I didn't have the startup disk, and when the comp restarted, it only has 16 bt colour, and the resolution is set on the lowest and I can't change it back to normal.

In the device manager everything seems to be working ok.

It is as if the comp is in safe mode, i can runsome programs but everything is extra big, and I can't connect to the net. (ADSL).

Also anything with graphics is very distorted.

I would appreciate any help.

Running Win98

You have to install the correct driver for your display adapter.

when you say startup disk, do you mean driver disk? Go to the manufacturer's website & download the latest drivers for your video card. If you can't get online with your current config, you may have to reinstall your old video card, download the driver for your new card, then swap back again

Go to the contorl panel and check under system what graphic card is install.
I'm quite sure it's the Microsoft standard vga driver. This allows only 16 colors at a resolution of 640x480 because it's meant as some sort of basic driver that works with nearly every card!

Download the correct driver (take newest version) from the manufacturers homepage and install it.
If you have a Nvidia TNT/TNT2 or any geforce graphiccard you can also download the newest Detonator driver from their side and install it!
