My Hitachi Simpledrive 1tb Hard Drive is dead ...... no lights come on & no noise.

Have bought a new hard drive & used the power supply from that to see if that is the cause - Still nothing :(

So I still need to try & recover data.

Can I dismantle hard drive & some how connect direct to desktop PC ?

I have dismantled already but can see to extra connections except the existing USB & power connections ?

I assume i could connect with a USB to sata cable ? But the USB connection in hard drive is a small one - the cables I have seen are the bigger connections ? Also how will the hard drive be powered ?

Please help ??

if you disasmble the external HDD, it should have a small CB that turns the power cable into a SATA power connector, and the USB to an eSATA connector. i have had 5 or 6 externals quit working on me, and just opened up the tower and put the actual HDD in a 3.5" bay slot, plugged it in, and it would run fine as a PnP HDD. but if you have an older HDD that runs off of IDE and 4pin, then you would have to set it up as a slave drive (using the jumpers), and try it that way.

i hope this helps, if not send me more info on the HDD, maybe a pic of it (where it connects to the USB cable).
