Comment:

Computer is a Pentium 4 with a SATA 80GB drive and XP Pro SP2.

My windows recently crashed (something about a corrupt hal.dll file). I restarted the computer only to get the following error:

"A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

I don't think the drive is physically damaged. I also cannot repair Windows (for some reason I don't get that option on the boot disc).

Is there anything I can do in the recovery console?

Please advise; the data on the disc is vital.

"Please advise; the data on the disc is vital". If this is true then you should already have backups of the data. You do make backups don't you?

Look at the link below.

Make sure your drive is ok. Use the Recovery Console to run chkdsk /r

After running Recovery Console and doing the chkdsk /r /p, the process stopped at 25%, and I got a message saying: 'The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'.

Also I cannot delete/modify the boot.ini to rebuild. Also directory listing fails: 'error occurred during directory enumeration.'

Please help.

Okay well I ran SeaTools and it failed the short diagnostic test. Also ran the long test in DOS and it gave me over 50 errors in less than 1%.

Is it done? =(

I don't hear any strange mechanical noises or smells.
