CPU/Ram: Pentium IV - Ram ?
Model/Manufacturer: Dell Inspiron Notebook

laptop has a black screen with just the message disk read error on it. Cannot get Windows to come up. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong and what can be done.


my daughter's laptop has a black screen wtih the message "disk read error" what does this mean? I am no computer whiz so please speak in laymen's terms!! thx

Make sure there are no CD/DVDs or diskettes. Disconnect all USB devices. See if you can boot into CMOS and check to see that boot off HDD is enabled.

Your HDD may have failed.
