Hello members
A neighbour called me over to see his machine, a Compaq Pressario.
The only thing it comes up with is "disk read error press crtl, alt delete"
I checked to see if the floppy was still there, no so..
I did insert the XP CD and went to the recovery.
One of the things I did then was to try the CHKDSK and I got as much as: "performing additional checking and recovery... " and that was all, no further steps where possible.
Later on it came up on the screen: "1720 Hardware detects imminent failure"
So do I have any chance?
I have bought another HDD for him and loaded XP and after booting it still says:
"disk read error press crtl, alt delete"
Please can someone help?

Thanks

Luregn

How did you load up XP on the new drive? In a different machine? If so it isn't surprising that it won't boot in the presario.
You need to check in BIOS that the drive (new or old) is being recognised. Try to get and run harddrive diagnostic test from the maker. Check and if necessary replace IDE cables.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Hi Richard, thanks
I did load on the same computer and
will replace cables and get back here in one or two days.
The drive is recognised in the BIOS.
It was also recognised when loading Windows and I did partition it.
Any other ideas?

Thanks

The "New" drive is the only one in the system when testing??

Zenith
I have disconnected the old drive.
Firstly I want to change cable and see if it is still recognised in BIOS then run memtest to see if there is an issue with memory, then get the WD test and then if it still does not work then I am at the end of my capacity.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Luregn
