my dvd-rw drive just stopped reading disk. when i put a disk in it says that the disk is empty. this happens with cd's and dvd's. i tried cleaning it but it wouldn't read my cd cleaner either.

It is unusual that both the CD & DVD lasers would go out simualtaneously. I would suggest reseating the IDE cable.

Normal wear.A cdrom or dvdrom or cd-rw or dvd-rw is a part that you may have to change a few times over the life of your computer even more so if this is the only drive of this type present.If you have a spare on hand(any type as stated abobe will do)use it to test the circuitry.If you can read a music CD for instance then the old drive is bad.If you can't do this,get a new one,the risk is minimal that you would be wrong to change it.Good luck.
