hello. yesterday i had the misfortune of having my PC fail to boot up, just gave me the dreaded "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press Enter". after doing some research i thought my main hard drive (with Win2K on it) had died. so i bought a new drive and put a fresh copy of Win2K on it and that install seemed to go fine and normal. when i tried to boot for the first time, i again got that "Disk boot failure" message. the drive was correctly recognized in the BIOS, but it would not boot. i remembered from years ago having a slightly similar problem with drive recognition/booting and so I changed my current drive jumpers from master and slave to cable select. now the system comes up fine, and also using the original drive that i had thought went bad, but i do not understand why changing the jumpers to CS fixed my system. i'm very concerned that there could be an issue with the motherboard and i don't want it to all of a sudden die on me again. I have a Soyo SY-P4IS2 board, with a P4 1.8 chip, 1.5GB SDRAM, 2 Western Digital hard drives. during my "fixing" i flash upgraded the bios to the latest version. the flash didn't fix anything, it was changing the jumpers on the hard drives. had read that maybe my board's battery was going bad? any insight on why changing the drives to CS fixed my boot problem would truly be appreciated!
thanks, marc

I don't use cable select & don't recommend it to anyone...master/slave is the way to go. I can't explain why your's would work one way, but not the other.

A weak battery is a possibilty, but if that IS the cause of your problem, you'll probably encounter it again soon
