Is there an explanation for the SHOWN amount of disc space used (in the pie chart).....and the EXPECTED amount of disc space used? For example, I just did a clean install of XP, and the amount of disc space used was much greater than the amount of disc space that I thought would be used.

IF you do not have the option to see hidden files and folders, then the used space will definitely be larger than the files you can see. Most ntably would be the pageing file (or swap file). This file will typically be 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed. So if the machine has 512MB of RAM then there will be a swap file that is up to 3/4 of a Gig.
