Question 1 : I am trying to restore my computer back to the factory settings. My computer crashed along with my cd drive. I replaced it with a Samsung DVD Writer. The boys at the Geek Squad said all i would have to do is install it, turn it on , and put the windows reinstall cd in and follow the directions. I'm sure by now you know that did not work. I am getting all sorts of messages about drivers not found. I tried to change the boot sequence a few times but I don;t think I am moving in the right direction. Your help is much appreciated as I do not want to have to purchase a new computer this one is only 3 years old. Thanks in advance.

Geek Squad?? lol!

I hate to ask, but how much did you pay for the burner? They're available online for about $25. What makes you think the old CD drive crashed anyway? Sounds like you have other issues.

Did you set the jumper on the back of the drive before installing it? If you didn't, take a look at the old drive & see if the jumper is on MA, SL or CS, then set your new drive's jumper the same way.

Go into the BIOS & set the burner as the 1st boot device, then boot off the CD. You realize that you will lose everything when you do the restore, right?

If you used a Microsoft CD to install, that may be why you are getting the driver messages.

You probably should use the Dell recovery procedure. The following site has some tips on recovering Dell PCs.

I have checked the back of my old and new cd drive and do not have a jumper option. My new cd drive is a Super-Writemaster made by Samsung. My old one was a Philips DVD R/RW Drive. I tried to change the boot sequence an CD-ROM Drive (not Present). What next?

Since my last message I have tried to change the BIOS and reboot. I am still getting the Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA,SATA-2
Drive 3 not found: Parallel ATA,PTA-1 (PRI IDE SLAVE). I have also taken the drive out and reinstalled it to ensure it was connected properly. I am excited to hear from the guru's on the fix.

If anyone is there. I took my computer back in to the Geek Squad and they no have determined that it is the motherboard that is the problem.Does that sound correct?
