I'm sure if you check on wiki you can find descriptions of how they work. The major difference as I see it is in cost.
A Laser printer will be more expensive to purchase and the toner cartridges on average cost more than inkjet cartridges however in general the cost per page is much lower. Laser printers generally have service life measured in 10s of thousands of pages and toner cartridges are good for several thousand pages each. Inkjet printers have service life measured in thousands and the ink cartridges will do less than 100 pages. Each type of printer has advantages & disadvantages.
