Ok, I started thinking about buying a new sound card, a 5.1 sound blaster live card on ebay, when I suddenly noticed the card looked way bigger then my PCI slot could handle. But I thought that all PCI slots were standard size, are there ones bigger then What I have? I have a 32 bit PCI slot for PCI 2.2-compliant bus interface.
One of the auctions also said it required a Open half-length PCI 2.1 compliant slot. What is that and what is the difference between all of these pci slots?
All PCI slots are the same size. The only difference as you already stated is PCI standard. If you have PCI 2.1 either standard will work without issues. If anyone else has seen a different size PCI slot, let me know because I have looked into hundreds of systems and have never seen any difference at all.

there are some larger PCI slots. these run at 66 mhz, and theres no sound card that uses the extra space.
The soundblaster live fits in a standard pci slot. the physical size of the 33 mhz PCI slot hasn't changed since the 486

That is probably an isa slot. Most newer mb dont have an isa slot. The old computers had them.
I think you're looking at the overall size of the card and not the distance the connector is from the mounting plate (or whatever it's called). The card itself can be almost any length. The slot, as 666 pointed out, hasn't changed since a 19" monitor was only for the wealthy!

There are larger PCI slots which are approx twice the length of the standard slot + can run at 64-bit 66mhz but these are exclusively found in servers for high level RAID cards. I wouldn't worry as all desktop PCI slots are a standard size.
