Basically they are competing technologies. If your burner is capable of using both, which most are, then you can. Many home players will only read disks of one type or the other. Therefore if burning rips of movies you may nee to verify what media and also what formats your player can handle.

There is also a slight difference in actual capacity. DVD disks suffer from the same issues as harddrives concerning the difference in how they are measured.

There is also a third type of DVD recordable disk, DVD RAM. Google for DVD media types and you will get many hits.

From what I've read DVD+R is also more compatible with home dvd players in case you burn movies.

On my computer I see/find no difference but on my DVD Recorder attached to my TV the DVD-RW offers more features over the +RW whereas I can add auto chapters every so many minutes where I cannot with +RW.

"As of 2006, the market for recordable DVD technology shows little sign of settling down in favour of either the plus or dash formats, which is mostly the result of the increasing numbers of dual-format devices that can record to both formats; it has become very difficult to find new devices that can only record to one of the formats. However, because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favour the DVD-R standard exclusively, and when creating DVDs for distribution (where the playing unit is unknown or older) the DVD-R format would normally be preferable."
