did i fried my Memory

i installed a 256MB memory module for my dell inspiron 1100 i installed it just like any other time then i turned on the computer it beeped a few times then the lights on top ....the ones that that have a like a lock and a 9 inside...and the one that has the same lock and and arrow pointing down...they both blink and my computer wont do noting from there....it turned off my lappy and removed the ram and it started normally...i tried switching modules and i got the same beeping and the lights bliking after...i decided to just put the factory ram there what should i do now ...i have installed Ram many times to other dell 1100 this is the first time it happens ..sorry for long writng
