If ou need this kind of help go to the local Computer Store and get someone to help you find a MODEM.

Take your Computer Make and Model #s with you.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

And you don't know if your Vista is 32 or 64 bit? This describes how to determine which you have:

For I dial up modem you have no need to worry about the bit count of the computer.

An external dial up modem will be using the RS232 serial interface or the USB interface and regardless of how many bits you computers has, they will still be fed to modem one bit at a time.

What you need worry about that there are drivers available for your particular Operating System.
