I have dial up, I am able to log onto the net but at various lengths it just stops, I have to disconnect and reconnect, anyone help me stop this? Thank you

Do you have call-waiting on your phone line? The audible tone that signals incoming calls can cause your modem to abruptly drop your connection.
Simply enter
*70,
in front of the number you are dialing for internet access to temporarily disable call-waiting.

Need a little more information:
Does the modem disconnect from the phone line? pPssible problem here is you have call waiting and it needs to be disabled (*70 before the dialup number). If not every time a call comes in you will get disconnected.
Does the modem only disconnect from the ISP server, that is, does the data transfer up and/or down stop but the modem still stays connected to the phone line? If this is the case there probably is a problem with the telephone lines, noise, capacity etc. which only you phone company can address.
To check your phone line for noise, pick up a hard wired connected phone, dial 1 and listen for any hissing, crackling or other background noises. If present you may have a line noise problem. You should not hear any noise if the lines are good.
Check all your connections to the modem, phone line, serial cord etc. and how long are the lines. The shorter the better.
If you are in a rural setting the distance from the phone company's switching stations will make a difference. The farther the distance the more switches the connection goes through. (I have this problem, as I get the data signal dropped sometimes, but I do not get disconnected from the phone line.)
Post back with any comments result you get.

Thank you for the responses, I believe this may be the case:

it is split a few times just within the house, so probably just a line quality problem...would be nice if we'd get something more realiable out here, but that's the phone company to do...
Thank you, I guess I'll just be patient with it...
