My wifes computer at work cannot get on the internet, error message says modem cannot detect dial tone. What can I do to help her with the problem? It has been a long time since I used a dialup modem, I have forgotten how to trouble shoot the thing.

Test one should be to plug in a telephone at the same outlet as the modem is plugged into- does it pick up a dial tone??

you have established that the phone socket works so
1) is the lead/cable 100% fine
2) are the right drivers installed for that modem. It sometimes happens that the drivers that windows allocated automatically dont always work and you need to get specific drivers from the modem makers website
3) it might be that the modem is just plain faulty/damaged - like from lightning occurring when it is plugged into phone line.

Hi, Make sure the line is plugged into the modem in the line jack and not the Tel jack. Does the modem diagnostic get a response when you run More Info?

Good Luck, Jim

As a long shot, there might be something substandard about the dial tone itself. See if unticking "wait for dial tone" entry helps. It's in:

Control Panel/Modem/Properties/Connection.

I'm wondering why your wife is using dial-up when she's at work. Doesn't the company have a network of their own?

If the phone line is digital rather than analog, the modem may very well NOT work.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

in the United Kingdom in offices you normally have to press 9 in order to get an 'outside' dial tone , instead of the different dial tone you get for dialling numbers within same building. Is that it? (is it clever enough to know it's not an 'outside' dial tone). in dialling properties (i think its there) you can tell it to dial a certain number to go outside and untick await dial tone and perhaps that will help
