Whats the best way to manually determine if the nic is bad? A method that i try is to insert a static ip on the nic and try to ping that ip. Any other ideas. Thanks

Since they are so very inexpensive, I have a couple laying around and if one appears to not be working, I swap it for another and quickly tell if it's the NIC or something else.

The communication between the nic and the computer could be ok but there could be a problem with the line circuits.

If the Link light on the modem is not on when you are connected to the network, either the cable is not correct or damaged, or the network card is bad, or not installed.

You don't really need to configure a static ip to ping your NIC, just ping 127.0.0.1 that is always your internal loopback address no matter what the ip address is configured as.
