Diagnose cause for Win 7 to freeze & require hard restart

Specs: Windows 7, pentium i5 2.4ghz 4mb ram
I am getting strange windows 7 freezes - noticeably when I go AFK, or scan the hard drive. Needs a hard reset. I reformatted my hard drive which seemed to help for a couple of days, but now the freezes are back - where should I look to diagnose the problem?

I would download seatools for dos, make a bootable cd of the ISO file and run the long test. If the hard drive is failing it will need replaced. A faulty ram stick or poorly seated ram module can also cause freezing. If the computer still loads windows 7, typing in memtest will bring up the ram testing module and run on scan on reboot, also if it does load windows you may try downloading seatools for windows, but if not you'll have to make the disk. If the computer does not boot you can download memtest86 ISO....make a bootable cd and this tests the ram modules. Do the long test on the hard drive if it passes the quick test.
