OS: win xp
CPU/Ram: 2.2ghz pentium 4, 256mb r
Model/Manufacturer: dell
Comment:
ive got a big fat problem. i love to use radarsync, an online hardware scan, to find out what drivers i need after reinstalling windows. however, i just reinstalled on a dell 2400 and i cannot use the internet. my only means of communication with this computer is a 2 gig flash drive. so i go in the device manager-->other devices-->ethernet controller, and there is a big ugly "?!" next to it. i right click go into properties, it says DIVICE TYPE: OTHER DIVICES, MANUFACTURER: UNKNOWN, DRIVER PROVIDER: UNKNOWN, DRIVER VERSION: NOT AVAILABLE. so i open up the computer, and i see the ethernet card is within the motheboard. i just need to know how to figure out what driver i need and i can get it from download.com. all i know about it is that it is realtech. any ideas? maybe the name of a non-online hardware scanner?

Go to www.support.dell.com and enter the ST of the machine. You can then get the proper driver from Dell.

You should have back up copies of all your drivers, just in case. However, if you perform regular system maintenance, you should NEVER have to reinstall XP.

You can download device drivers from the Dell website:

There's only one integrated NIC driver listed there. Did you enter your ST?

i mislead you. if i just double click on it a command window appears and disapears. if i choose run as, the command window stays open and i get the error message. i tried saving to to c:/, the drive with my operating systme on it, and ran the exe and the same thing happened. this happens with all exes. also, the icon for the exes is always the cute little command window, instead of the graphic that shows up on other computers.

I would start from scratch, formatting and reinstalling AFTER downloading the drivers you need and saving them to external media, or at least a separate partition.

i just did that. if i format and reinstall again, logic dictates the exact same thing will happen.
