Is there a tool that can detect the throughput of transferring a file? The reason I'm asking is, I have an external hd with a usb and esata interface and I'm not convinced that the esata is any faster. I'd like to actually see what kind of speeds I'm getting.

USB 2.0 has a theoretical transfer speed of 480Mbps which equals 60MBps. eSATA has a theoretical transfer speed of 300MBps assuming a SATA II drive and eSATA controller.

To test your SATA controller thruput go to Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers> right click on one of your serial controllers> choose primary channel> speed test. Repeat for all drives.

Download HD_speed to test both types. Click on the link below.

It's definitely faster but nowhere near 300 MB/s. It hovers around 75MB/s.

The 300MB/s is theoretical. No one actually gets anywhere near that. Your burst speed is probably more that half the 300 number though.

Doesn't matter if eSATA or internal SATA. Those will bee the numbers.

I have TWO SATA II internal drives. The primary drive was installed using IDE compatibility mode. The Secondary was installed after SATA controllers were installed.

My average numbers are Primary 57.5, Secondary 91.7, External USB 18.9.

As you can see, using the SATA controller drivers makes a difference in the numbers. In actual application the only time I notice any difference is when transferring large files.
