Dell Trinitron monitor

I have a few questions.

I just picked up a 21 inch Dell Trinitron monitor from a thrift shop for $2 bucks, and it works great.

When I go into the options into Screen option. it says Landing and there is 4 things to Adjust from 0 - 100% and there is also somthing called Cancel Moire. I don't know these options do, or with they are for.

Another thing is the bright Adjustment I have all the way to 0% and the monitor is still too bright, I would like to get it a little less bright.

When I turn on the computer from a cold start. The monitor will be bright for the first few mins and gradaully dim without noticing, also from a cold turn on, the screen is not 100% full, there about a 10th of a inch not fully blow up on the left and right sides, but gradully as it warms up blows up to where I want it. And one more thing while warming up, if I go on the internet, and when I change pages the screen will blow up a tad bit and shrink back, does that with bright pages a little more. Can All that be changed or is that the monitor warming up and adjusting it self?

brightness: There is usually a 'master' brightness adjustment screw inside the casing. It's ***DANGEROUS*** to go in there (many thousands of volts there to make the cathode ray tube work)because you have to have the monitor running with the casing off to adjust it whilst looking at the effect on the screen, very slight movement of screw makes a lot of difference. It is something a TV repair man (as opposed to computer repair man) would be expert on.
Another way is most computers (not all) have software brightness control within the settings for the graphics card - this is more likely to be there is you have the 'proper' drivers from tha graphics card makers website - might not be there if using the standard windows drivers within the windows original disc.

Now you know why you only paid $2 for it. The monitor is coming to the end of its useful life and is likely to give up at any moment.

The variations is image size is indicative of a CRT that is getting old and tired and the high tension transformer is having to work overtime to maintain an image.

As for moire put 'define:moire' into Google and you will get all the information your need. It is a common problem with CRT monitors. more noticeable at certain resolutions.

There is also a Option called Color Return, and says Availiable After Warm up. I think all the symptoms are the Warm up Process The "Availiable After Warm up" goes away in about 10 to 20 mins after monitor is turned on, than I can use Color Return. The monitor is dated Aug 2000..

Either forget that monitor or live with its problems as long as you can. All the drivers, software, or tweaking will not fix it.

Over brightness is usually a CRT cathode/heater leak.

Size increase with picture brightness is due to the EHT falling (scan coils then have more influence), and vice versa. If you have either a CRT problem or worn out EHT rectifier these will cause poor EHT regulation as the brightness changes with picture content.

None of this matters a fig. You can't fix it unless you are into that sort of thing and it wouldn't be worth getting it fixed (assuming anyone would even take it on).

I used to do TV repairs.

You guys are right. I do see two lines going through the screen, one on the bottom and one on the top, and there is a light square in the middle of the screen, looks like it's burned into the screen. I'm suprise I did not notice these sythoms. Does anyone know if this problem is going to get worse, at all, soon, or could take years? Should I go ahead and hook the old monitor back up? and junk this one....

Had a look at above link. Not too many of the symptoms listed there seem to fit very closely with those you gave in your post.

Whatever, I'd stick my neck out and suggest that it is quite likely to hang a couple of years or so, if you are happy to live with what it does.

Nothing is ever too predictable. Things that are working one day can fail the next day.

Ok...I noticed the screen does not blow up while surfing the internet anymore while warming up. I'm guessing the monitor was probably sitting somewhere not in use for a long time and the longer it runs the better it works again. It's like with an old T.V. from the early 70's that I found one time. The longer it was on, the better the perfomance got, that was probably sitting for a long period of time without being used..I'm guessing the parts take time to get use to performing again....

Thanks DerekW and everybody else..

Yes, that's quite possible. In particular, electrolytic capacitors have to reform before they function properly.
