Subject: Dell T450 RAM upgrade OS: Win 98/XP CPU/Ram: 450MHz/98MB

Comment: I'm in the process of upgrading a Dell Dimension T450 from Windows 98 to Windows XP. It has 98MB RAM currently (64MB + 32MB), and I'd like to get it closer to the 256MB recommended for XP. I got a 128MB PC100MHz SDRAM DIMM, making sure the parity matches the existing DIMMs. When I slotted it and booted Win98, the machine failed during windows driver loading, and it prompted me to restart. I decided to reformat the hard drive and try the new memory during the Windows 98 installation, and that failed, too. Any suggestions? Does the T450 motherboard only support some maximum size DIMM?

Reply: (edit)Go to www.crucial.com then input your make and model and the configurator will tell you exactly what your mobo will take (per slot) and total system RAM.

Reply: (edit)Crucial lists many SDRAM DIMMs for Dell (XPS) T450 machines, from 32MB to 256MB, both PC100 and PC133. So it looks like the basic specs of the DIMM I bought are okay. One other thing I should have mentioned: I tried pulling the original two DIMMs and using just the new one, and that wouldn't work either. Further, I've finished upgrading to XP -- should I try again with the new OS? Is XP more tolerant than Win98 for RAM upgrades?

Reply: (edit)""One other thing I should have mentioned: I tried pulling the original two DIMMs and using just the new one, and that wouldn't work either."" ???????????? Did you try to solo this new stick while just running 98 or tried it to do the upgrade process? Generally trying a problem stick of RAM in solo is how you determine if it is a bad stick (this maybe what you have?) Do a search on this site for a recommended RAM tester (online) to verify if this DIMM stick is actually bad, it happens. I'll assume you also checked your system against MS minimum (std suggested is better) system requirements, for hdw, to upgraed to XP? Good luck.
