I am now responsible for getting a Dell Optiplex GX1 running at my school. When I plug everything in, no video appears on the monitor. I opened up the system and found that the RAM was not totally in its socket, so I pushed it down into the socket with the same result -- no video.

Any and all assistance would be very much appreciated.

Matt

If it has a videocard that uses an expansion slot make sure it is seated in the slot or even remove it and plug it back in.

Make sure your monitor cable is connecting good and the monitor has power and is turned on(I know).

Also if the computer has onboard(built in the motherboard) video but previously had a videocard installed in one of expansion slots and subsequently removed. The settings in your BIOS may not be set to use the onboard video.

To get into the BIOS power on or reboot your computer then hit whatever key it says will enter setup (Del, F1, Esc or something). Make sure it is set up to use onboard video. If you have it.

Try a different monitor and see if it works. That way you could eliminate the monitor as being the source of the problem.

I tried two different monitors, and I also connected them to my laptop computer and they worked. All cables are connected securely and monitors do have power. When the system turns on, indicator lights turn on. But thanks for the idea of a different video card, I'll try that one tomorrow morning. Thanks for your suggestion. Any others would also be appreciated.

Make sure you have the proper video driver installed. My Dell Optiplex uses SvTrios (something close to that) driver. Hope this sheds some light on your problem.

I installed a new video card today and it still did not work. My school has issued a trouble ticket with Dell, so they should be handling it within the next day or two. Thanks a lot anyways for all your suggestions. I really do appreciate them.
